I have a frustrating experience to share with you, the true NPA's among you knows how this feels...
When I got up and out of the bedroom on Saturday morning I wondered WHAT is that smell, WHY does it smell like that and I remember thinking that it smelled like cellulose thinner.
But when I got downstairs and opened the door to the living room I knew...
My first thought was: How many fatalities and casualties..?
Fortunately I keep 99% of my polishes in drawers, but I keep a number of toppers in acrylic racks on the glass shelf - see my setup HERE - and this what it normally looks like:
But this was the sight that met me Saturday morning - and before I took the photos I already had picked up a handful of polishes as I started working my way through puddles of clear nail polish with flakies or glitters...
The fatalities are 6-8 effect topper polishes, both my LARGE crystal files that I cannot live without, a glass in which I had brushes...
The casualties are the two small acrylic racks that the toppers used to be in are not broken, one is a little stained, the other one got really stained when Max Factor Fantasy Fire died all over it (including the purple on the floor). Some of the tiles and the glass shelf got minor marks.
After 3+ hours of heavy duty floor and furniture cleaning fortunately things were back to normal except for a few flakies and glitters that escaped the cleaning and are shining on the floor when the sun hits them.
The glass shelf also is back in place - but with a safer mounting...
I guess I'm the eternal optimist, I always try to keep focus on the good things in life - and I feel it could have been much, much worse.
Three new polishes from a brand new indie brand, a very rare Chanel, and a few other unswatched polishes were on the top of the metal suitcase, and they all survived - I'm truly thankful of that!!
Further more and most of all - I had a breakfast appointment with a friend of mine here at our place, and she can bend her knees and kneel down (I cannot after surgery in both knees + the surgery/problems with neck and shoulders), so she did the heavy duty work - thank you so, so much my dear friend, I feel so lucky and grateful <3
Hahahaha Saturday evening we got some kind of explanation...
Since early summer a very shy and easily spooked feral cat have been hanging around our place (we live in the countryside), and I have worked with him and made him more and more confident. 2 months ago we lured him into a trap and had him neutered. Food is an essential part of taming a feral cat, and around the time he got neutered, he started arriving each evening around dinner time to get some "people food" (non of our other 3 cats get that).
In the middle of November I was able to touch him for the first time. Over the last 3 weeks he increasingly enjoys being cuddled - but he still is easily spooked, so we sometimes gets a paw full of claws, but not often...
He also spends more and more time here. Anyhow - a few evenings ago I saw him try to follow one of the other cats up on the fridge where they have a soft pillow. Saturday morning he arrived in the middle of all the confusion - and seemed very spooked. But in the evening he came in time for dinner - and guess who had spots of polish with glitter and flakies in his fur on the back, one cheek and a leg - well yes of course Tyson, the most masculine cat around LOL
I'm guess he tried to use the shelf to enter the top of the fridge and as it wasn't too stable it fell down, fortunately not on him because it's very heavy - but he fell to the floor in a rain of falling polish bottles landing with the breaking around him - poor him...
Oh my goodness!! Glad there wasn't too much damage! I've only broken one bottle of polish and it was a glitter. Glad the kitty was ok too!
SvarSletYes, thank God that the cat is OK and that it wasn't worse...
SletAs soon as I saw the catflap I though Cat!
SvarSletLOL - but non-the-less it couldn't have happened if the self was secure....
SletPoor you and poor cat. It is good there weren't more fatalities, but any of them is a sad business.
SvarSletYes poor cat - but fortunately he didn't get the shelf over him...
SletWhat a shame but as you say it could have been worse
SvarSletIt definitely could!
SletOh Maria I know how you feel. I think I would have been upset and then worried about the cat and making sure it was okay. You've always got to look on the positive side of things. That's great your friend helped you too :-D
SvarSletMy polishes are all in Helmers and a few Lennarts on top of them and mainly my Ciate sets on top of the Lennarts. My polish room door is always closed when I'm not in it, but I do let the cats in supervised. The male is really into trying to steal my 4 way buffers. He's so curious - he's a Bengal and a typical one at that!
That sounds like really good work you are doing with the feral cat - did you name him? It is good when you can win them over and help them out. One of my females was so timid and scared of my husband when we first got her. She used to hiss and spit and growl at him. We think the previous owner's husband had beaten her up :-( After about a year and a half of care, love and patience - he won her over and she is so sweet to him now. She always came to me, when we got her she took to me right away and was very clingy. It does take time, patience and love :-)
On a side note and to answer your question, the Sally Hansen blue polish didn't stain at all - I even has glitter on a few nails and nothing! I really cannot work out what blues will stain and which won't :-|
Fortunately I didn't think it had anything to do with a cat - that shelf was a disaster waiting to happen...
SletAww, you have a Bengal - interesting breed - many years ago I had a few litters of Sokoke cates...
Yes, his name is Tyson, he is sooo sturdy built and with a neck like an ox, he clearly has been fighting a lot - but not with our cats (all neutered boys).
Time and patience and a bit of psychology and food are good tools. I have trained animals all my life and I tamed five other feral cats before him - they all turned out like wonderful cats, maybe not trusting towards stranger but with complete trust in me...
Ah, thanks for telling - it would be nice to know just what it is about some blues - and how to recognize it...
I my experience cats and shelves never mix! When we moved into our new house last year. The previous owner left shelves up in the main room - we thought we'd keep them - they looked nice and handy for books and such. We were sitting watching the TV one night and got the fright of our lives! The Bengal had jumped onto one from the sittee and his weight brought it down. Made such a loud noise! He landed on the sittee and ran away - he was fine - but we got such a fright! We checked the other two were sturdy - they seemed good and firm. So about a week later he was chasing the girls - one jumped onto the top shelf and he went up with her - that shelf came down too - nearly broke the lamp! Again the cats were fine! After the 2nd time we decided to take the 3rd shelf down LOL. So no more shelves in our house!
SletAh Tyson - I must have mis-read that part, thinking it was another cat! I get it now :-)
Yes, she is very trusting and comfortable with both of us but unsure of others - she usually runs and hides when friends are over. One of my friends who is always over to visit - she came out and headbutted him on the leg - you know when they are marking you. So I took this as a good sign she likes him :-D The Bengal is too nosy and always comes to visit people in the house!
In all my years of painting - I still have no clue how to tell. One I think that will stain doesn't and vice versa! :-|
LOL I see why you took down the third shelf ;)
SletBUT to Tyson's defense THIS shelf WAS a catastrophe waiting to happen...
Yes headbuts are a good sign - and the cats shows that you are "worthy" ;)
I had a feeling that there was a cat involved! Good thing that nothing happened to him, and yay that the Chanel survived too!
SvarSletI don't have any polishes on shelves, but then again, I don't have a cat either :D
Yes, I'm so happy nothing happened to him - but if the self was secure - it could not have happened - the shelf was a disaster waiting to happen...
SletWell I do also on my polish furniture's - and they never ever broke a single bottle
Cats are lovely at least most of the time.....
SvarSletI think 99% of the time - and in this case the fault wasn't his - it was the shelf!
SletI tried to make so-called wild cats friendly several times... not that they became knees lovers but sometimes it happened that they were purring when petted. It took some time.
SvarSletI did so 5 times before - with great success, it can take months and the previous experience with people are very important to the speed.
SletTyson I believe once was around humans, but he has been mistreated and clearly have had things thrown after him - I think he has been subjected to something truly terrible...
as I wrote in my reply til Ananka: "Time and patience and a bit of psychology and food are good tools. I have trained animals all my life and I tamed five other feral cats before him - they all turned out like wonderful cats, maybe not trusting towards stranger but with complete trust in me..."
So what I thought first - cat - , when you sent me the pics was right. Still it looks like in a nightmare and I'm glad dogs don't climb ;o).
SvarSletKind regards,
Elena
Well to Tyson's defense THIS shelf WAS a catastrophe waiting to happen...
SletHahahaha what a great and funny (also bit sad...) story!! Was wondering throughout reading this what the cause was for it to fall. You must have been so bummed out!!!
SvarSletI was really bummed out - not a pretty sight.
SletBut when things were back to normal it is a fund story LOL
I am very sorry Maria about the damage, but see the positive side of it (if it is possible), now you can buy new polishes and usually that helps to be in a better mood :)
SvarSletLOL you are a very wise woman :D
SletIf I cannot find the same polishes I probably can find some other ones, right :D
This is both a sad and funny story! I'm glad that most of your polish bottles were fine and that the cat only lost his masculinity and no body parts :P
SvarSletI broke my OPI glass file once and I seriously had to cry.. so I think you handle this very well :)
SletIndeed both sad and fun - and thank you, I guess I'm good at handling emergencies LOL
Sletlol, i immediately knew there's some tomcat to blame... note female, because they are usually more careful ;)
SvarSletyou've right, this could be much worst :D
Well in this case it could have happened without any cat THIS shelf WAS a catastrophe waiting to happen...
SletAnd yes - it could have been much, much worse!!
So sorry to hear this. But glad to hear that the most of your polish bottles are fine.
SvarSletYes, the clean up clearly was the worst part!
SletGodt det meste overlevede :D Min mand sagde (da jeg viste ham det, og fortalte om katten) - møgdyr (altså katten) - det var aldrig sket med en labrador :D haha :D Jeg kan nu godt li katte ;)
SvarSletJa, det kunne have gået meget galt...
SletJeg elsker mine katte og den hylde var en katastrofe der bare ventede på at ske - og måske var katten bare på gulvet da det skete - så det er forkert at give ham skylden...
What a terrible experience, I put all my bottles in drawers, so normally no one get broken... But cats are cats LOL and you know what has been the cause ^^ I was so deeply sorry while reading your story :(
SvarSletWell the 1.670 of my bottles also are in drawers, that is the safest way, these were only a few toppers for easy access and display :)
SletAnd THIS shelf WAS a catastrophe waiting to happen, and in retrospect I think it's quite fun ;)...
That's terrible! I'm so sorry you had so much trouble. On the other side, I have the image in my mind of the cat jumping and running away after the disaster, and coming for dinner with glitters on its furs... and it's quite funny!
SvarSletIt is quite funny in hindsight - that is so true ;)
SletI am glad the expensive chanel and indie polishes survived the crash! Animals always make life so much more funny and exciting!
SvarSletAnimals really does just that - and in this case a faulty mounting did help a lot :)
SletOMG :O. But you are right, it could be worse :)... And I'm sure cat didn't want to do anything bad ;)
SvarSletFortunately animals NEVER deliberately do something bad, only humans do that :)
SletWhat a mess!! Bright side: Tyson didn't get hurt and your vintage Chanel (and the indies) are safe!
SvarSletA couple weeks ago out cat (trying to check into the fish bowl - he usually pretends he doesn't care) knocked over the plastic "spare bowl", spilling 1,5l of water on the floor: the crush scared the hell out of him, I can just imagine your poor cat in the middle of glass/bottles falling on the floor!
Yes, the mess was the worst part!
SletPoor him, I imagine he leaves the fish bowl alone from now on LOL
Yes, this would have scared the hell out of any cat - and imagine Tyson not being too confident about being inside a house - it must have been even scarier for him...
That's too bad but you're right it could have been worse.
SvarSletAnd cats, hmmm i think they a little bit mischievous :D
It could indeed!
SletThey are - but this shelf WAS a catastrophe waiting to happen!!
You should have taken the photo of that casual manicure "cat with dots" :-) Yes, the sight that you had in your living room on Saturday morning is definitely the sight that noone wants to see... Fortunately, as you wrote, it could have been much worse... and that is the best way you can deal it - with your optimism! :-)
SvarSletThat could have been fun, but I'll not compromise his trust in me by sticking a camera in his face :)
SletAnd yes - it could have been much, much worse, and in retrospect is is a bit funny!
Oh No. Lucky most of them didn't broke would be a mess to clean.
SvarSletYou are so right - it was difficult enough with the 6-8 that did break LOL
Sletoh, no, this is a bummer!
SvarSletYes it was at least when it happened :)
SletA polishaholics nightmare! Interesting an fun to read! Ha, ha, ha! I didn't guess that it was the cat! :-) Wow! It's good that you only lost a few bottles. But sad to hear about your operations. I hope you can get better and better. I'm impressed that you can tame animals. I will try to learn from you and try to keep focus on the good things in life. :-)
SvarSletIn retrospect it really is quite fun :)
SletUnfortunately I don't have the chance to get better, but as long as it doesn't get worse, but I suspect it might do that - so I have to enjoy every day - and I do :)
Taming is such a wonderful experience - thanks - I think you will like it :)
