In the beginning of December, my thumb nails were longer than ever, and they both naturally curl inwards at the outside, getting more pronounced the longer they get. I had filed the sides, and if it was because of a lot of typing, I don’t know, but within a few days they both showed a rip in the middle of the nail bed. Needless to say, I was extremely careful and did not use my thumbs as tools whatsoever, and I filed them rather short.
Mid December I decided it was time to do something, my right thumb had twice been in danger of a serious break, where bloodshed would have been the result. So I patched the break and the area around it with a tiny piece of teabag. First I added a little base coat to the area, then I placed the little piece of tea bag, and with a rosewood stick and/or tweezers I placed it properly and flattened it. After a while i added base coat as normal. Se photos below.
Note: If I really worked with my hands, I secured the thumbs with band aid or similar for an extra support of the break. In the future I'm going to use another method (see farther below), but the theabag method is an easy quick fix.
Oh, and yes, I know I have pronounced ridges beyond buffing, but I have learned to live with them as a part of getting older :)

I should soon learn, that the patch needs to go all the way down to the skin. |
With a ridge filler base coat - med en ridge filler grundlak |
I change polish often, and sometimes a patch would last 3-4 changes – but sometimes/often I had to redo it every time I changed polish.

January 12, it looked like below, and I could have filed it down, but it would have been sore, so I decided to go for a few more days...

If, or rather the next time, I rip/tear/break a nail, I'll use silk wrap, resin and activator to fix it. I bought it HERE + silk wraps (the set is with fibreglass), and I'll make a new post, when I need to use it...
This VIDEO from JapanNailAndMore really clarified all the doubts and questions about using resin and activator, it's a fantastic tutorial.
NOTE: Even if the product is called lightless gel, it has nothing to do with gel nails, as also stated in the video.

This is a great post, thanks Maria!
SvarSletThank you aimeeus, I'm glad it was of any help :)
SletThis was very interesting, Maria. I have heard of using a tea bag for fixing up breaks in the nail, but didn't know how it actually worked. Thank you for sharing this!
SvarSletThank you The Laquer Tracker, I'm glad you found it useful!
SletGreat post! I usually don't have the patience to patch, but with a tear that far into the nail bed I can see why you did.
SvarSletThanks Karen, and yes, I really had to. I still think it was a weird place they broke...
SletI hate when my nails break that far down! Whenever I wash my hair a little hair goes in the break and it feels so bad! :P
SvarSletI have some broken nails at the moment too, but I don't know if I should try to fix it. My nails grow okay, so I'd rather just file it down and wait for it to grow (and break again xD)
I absolutely hate washing my hair when I have a break in one of my nails! It's the worst feeling when it catches on wet hair. Ugh. Makes me shiver just thinking about it. The last time this happened to me, I was being so careful not to snag it while washing my hair, but ended up snagging it on the mesh loofah instead. Practically ripped it right across the nail bed. :P So frustrating!
SletLOL, it sound like it's a good thing that I have very short hair. But I agree on the filing down if possible, unless you have plans where it would be nice with equally long nails LOL
Sletgreat post :-D
SvarSleti usually don't have the patience to do it right so i just shorten my nails :-(
or if i do that right, the patch works only until the next polishing :-p
Thanks nail crazy, and you are right, shortening is a lot faster, but in my case not an option...
SletI hate this when it happens. It normally happens to my thumbs too. Nice post!
SvarSletThank you, Nail Reflections :)
SletOuch! I get tears like that on my thumb all the time. I think it's because I type for work. I don't know. I'd like to not get them! Great post! Glad you got it to grow out!
SvarSletThanks, Ms. Lizard, I'm since then more and more convinced that it's because my nails curve more and more the longer they get, and typing adds to the pressure on the sides, so a break might be the nails way of reacting, but that's of course just a theory. At least I keep my thumb nails shorter now.
SletOh, my God... this is one of my everyday fears.. As I work in a supermarket and work all the day with money, metal coins, my manicures can not last long... Also, as I manage all kind of different products, plastic, carton boxes, my nails can brake any moment...
SvarSletCertainly, you couldn't have just shorten the nail, the "cut" was too low... I admire your persistance to repair it for so long..
I tried it one time when my nail broke like this, but for me the patch worked only until the next polishing...
I guess it is a good method for somebody who paints their nails and changes a manicure once a week, not every day :-)
Yes, msot of the time it wahs only from polishing to polishing - the next time I'll usea silk wrap :)
Slethello... my toe nails is short and slowly longer.... i don''t no how to made faster and longer my toe nail..pls help me.. :(
SvarSletToe nails grow much slower than finger nails - you cannot change that I'm afraid :)
Sletthanks for this great tip!
SvarSleti love your blog very cool :)
