Nail ridges and ridge fillers I tested

This a lengthy, but hopefully useful post on ridges and ridge fillers that has been brewing in my head for over two years... You might not have any ridges yet, but they are part of getting older :) 

My ridges (vertical) on my 61 year old nails are pretty severe even for my age – and as far as I remember they slowly started appearing around the age of 40, maybe even before.

With ridges like mine you can forget all about buffing, it will cause painful vertical breaks from the tip and upwards into the nail bed where the ridges have been buffed thinner. Actually I suspect that the nail plate is thinner where the ridges are.

I have been told that just like your skin get wrinkly as you get older, so does the skin under the nail plates, true or not – it sounds like a plausible explanation.

Stress (mental stress, short term illness, pregnancy, malnutrition etc.) can cause temporary horizontal ridges, and if you experience permanent horizontal ridges a medical check-up might be a good idea.

Lack of vitamins/minerals and medications is said to cause ridges to get worse – so there seems to be more reasons, but unfortunately there isn't much information to find about ridges on the internet let alone scientific material.

OK, get ready to see my naked nails and their ridges!
The two next photos are a little over a year ago as you can see on the nail length, my right hand has the worst ridges. You can enlarge the photos by clicking on them!

This is a mani with one single coat of a matte polish (Deborah Milano Sence Tech 100% Mat 04) – and NO base coat what so ever looks  like

- and two coats of the same matte polish over one coat of ridge filler. Mattes are problematic for me to wear....:
Some finishes makes the ridges (and any imperfections on the nail plate) really stand out: Metallics, foils, first generation holographics and matte.

Bonus info: A ridge fillers works like any aqua base if you are applying a holo that will drag…

Needless to say – I always wear a ridge filler base coat – even for swatches that are removed once I’m through taking my photos - and I take the photos a few minutes after I finish before a deep drying process starts... 

For normal use I realize that 2 coats of ridge filler would be even better, but frankly speaking: life is too short, and after all my ridges (and wrinkles) are part of who I am!

A top coat like my beloved Seche Vite that makes your nails look plump and smooth is of course a necessity for me to achieve as a smooth a final result as possible.

Here are the ridge fillers I used and tested during the last 3 years.
My verdict is based on how my mani looks the next day when 1 coat of the ridge filler in question + 2 coats of polish + 1 coat of Seche Vite Top Coat are completely dry!

Acceptable:

Acceptable: These are better than a normal (non ridge filler) base coat without doing a really good job.

China Glaze Ridge Filler Base Coat: When completely dry the ridges still are rather visible. My nails were somewhat yellow during the months I used it.

Essie Fill The Gap: When completely dry the ridges still are rather visible. 

Fairly good:

Fairly good: These do a decent job without being outstanding.

NailTek I (normal nails) and III (dry/brittle nails): I have used several bottles of this, it’s a little better than the China Glaze and the Essie, my ridges are less visible. NailTek have kept my nails in good shape, but today I mainly use it for swatches.

Golden Rose No More Ridges & Yellow is very plump upon application, but sadly it gradually loses its plumpness as it dries completely, and the end result is very similar to NailTek. It will however be great for swatches!
Barielle Hydrating Ridge Filler maybe leaves me with a bit plumper result, than Nail Tek and Golden Rose does, but it’s a close match.

The best I have tried so far, they are significantly better than the above mentioned without solving the problem completely.

Salon Sciences Instant Artificials is lovely to work with and the result is really good even the day after, but my ridges are still slightly visible. The finish is smooth but it could work better with problematic/dragging holos. The only really minus from my point of view is that it’s not sold online anywhere, and it’s also not available in stores in Denmark, but if you are in the US it is a good choice.

Nail Pattern Boldness Digital Hydration is lovely to work with and the result is really good even the day after, but my ridges are still slightly visible. It’s finish is slightly sticky and it also works well as a base for problematic/dragging holos. It’s my favorite over Instant Artificials because it’s available online, I buy it when I shop anyhow from Edgy Polish. 

Perfect:
I have not yet found a ridge filler that solves the problem entirely in one or two coats, and I really, really doubt that I ever will.
I could of course choose to have gel nails, but I don't feel confident about the chemicals and harsh treatment of the nails, so I accept my ridges, just like I accept all other signs of my age ;)

A useful tip: When I have used approximately half of my ridge filler I shake up a new bottle and from that I fill up the half full bottle – this way over time the formula becomes a bit fuller, should of course not be allowed to get goopy. 

Ideas for me to try? Do you know a ridge filler that I need to try, a heavy duty ridge filler that would work even on severe ridges like mine?

Seche Vite tutorial: how to keep it in perfect shape, avoid shrinkage and how to apply

This is how I keep my favorite top coat Seche Vite Dry Fast top coat happy, subsequently also myself, avoid shrinkage and I apply it....
I have used Seche Vite (often referred to as SV) almost 3 years now, and almost nothing really compares. HK Girl is a close rival, but I experienced smudging of nail art with it, and that's a no go for me.

OK, back to my beloved Seche Vite!

Part one: How to keep Seche Vite thinned and ready to go...

I always buy the "Professional Kit": one normal sized bottle of Seche Vite 14ml/0.5 fl oz and one large bottle 118ml/4 fl oz - and I always buy the large bottle of Seche Restore 59ml/2 fl oz that comes with a dropper, but you can choose to buy a smaller bottle with a built in dropper in the lid.

When I have used about this much (red arrow) - I add 7-10 drops of the Seche Restore thinner and gently roll it.

Sometimes I use my Seche Vite a few times more before I fill it up with fresh Seche Vite from the large bottle, in that case I often add a few further drops of Seche Restore before filling it up. I just carefully pour it right from the large into the small.
It's not an exact science, you soon will get into a routine - because this is all about experience...

Part two: How to avoid shrinkage...

If I get lazy and do not thin my Seche Vite until I'm this far (red arrow) down the bottle and my Seche Vite is getting a bit goopy, I do experience shrinkage like on the photo below - and more (maybe 15 or so) drops of Seche Restore are needed before filling the bottle up with fresh Seche Vite from the big bottle.

The shrinking normally isn't this bad until the day after when everything has completely dried, also remember how much the nail is enlarged in this photo, so the shrinkage naturally isn't this obvious in person.

Thoughts on shrinkage in general:
Personally I never experienced tip shrinkage that I have heard mentioned by others. But here are my thoughts on that and other shrinkage problems:
01. Did you remember to apply both polish and Seche Vite to the free edge of the nail tip?
02. Maybe you apply Seche Vite when your polish still is wet (too wet) - I always wait until my polish is a few minutes dry.
Have you by the way noticed that your second coat (not to mention third coat) of polish actually also shows shrinkage if you apply it too soon after the first (that even might have been applied to a not too dry base coat) - not at once, but as soon as all the layers dries completely after several hours/the next day?
So I'm thinking that if you add Seche Vite or another top coat on the several and still fairly wet coats, shrinkage is bound to happen with any top coat, and yes I tested it.
03. Did you use a thick enough coat? See more in Part three below!
04. I never apply thin coats of nail polish, so maybe that's why Zoya unfortunately dries extremely slowly on me. Even if I wait 10 -15 minutes or so - I still get shrinkage - it brings me back to 02.
05. Finally the unknown factor called body chemistry probably plays a role and makes polishes and top coats react differently from person to person.

Part three: How to apply and use Seche Vite...

The main thing is to use enough - add a rich and generous coat, that's important!! 

This is how I use my Seche Vite, If the bottle is full/almost full, I wipe one side of the brush lightly on the inside of the bottle neck, leaving a good drop like on the photo below:

I place my drop of Seche Vite in the area of the red circle - again not an exact science, it all comes with experience....

- make sure NOT to press the Seche Vite thin, the coat should be rich, loosen your wrist!!
Use a light movement to spread it over the nail (remember the free edge) and take advantage of the amazing self-leveling ability. If you have long nails you probably need to wipe less of the brush and/or dip twice.
If you normally apply thin coats of nail polish you need to rethink that when you apply Seche Vite!
Remember a generous coat!!

If you follow the simple steps above you hopefully will love Seche Vite as much as I do - I couldn't imagine a life without it - at least not a polished life without it!!

How to keep you polishes in perfect condition - longevity with a perfect formula

A polish dried out and is thrown away...
But here you have a few simple tips, that can help your polishes to stay alive for many, many years.

Storage: Polishes prefer to be stored standing upright in a cool and dark place without too much variation in temperature throughout the day.
I keep my polishes in these drawers, the sunlight cannot reach the drawers making them extra hot part of the day.
I know a woman with 25+ years old polishes (with a perfect formula) stored in her refrigerator.
I think the main thing is to avoid direct sunlight (and light in general) and to try to keep a fairly even temperature if at all possible.
If you want to enjoy your polishes on racks and walls, it would be perfect it the room can be fairly dark, unless you are in there to use and admire your beauties. But you do risk that some of the polishes change their color over time...
Do not store - your polishes in your bathroom, the temperature is fairly warm, and it is ever changing...

Check your polishes if you have a problem with their longevity.
And definitely if you buy or receive old polishes from others.
Let me show you a precious vintage Chanel I recently bought, only about half full - and not in a good condition.
My first step is to restore it with a nail polish thinner to make the formula perfect again. I use Seche Restore and this bottle needed 10-12 drops, but there are many other good brands of thinners on the market.
My advice is to stay away from nail polish removers and acetone as thinners, they WILL change your polish one way or another. In my youth many, many years ago I tried this - only to find the polish useless and dried out the next time I wanted to use them.

A certain evaporation will take place over the years, especially when the bottle is frequently used and gets emptier - but you can minimize it.
In the below case the reason is however obvious:

- the lid cannot be screwed on 100% tightly because the thread on the bottleneck is filled with dried out polish, and the solvent evaporates. This polish will dry out eventually, if it doesn't get help...

- but it should be the RIGHT help!
As you can see someone tried to clean this bottleneck with cotton wool or cotton pads - the lint stuck to the dried out polish, that weren't even removed in the process, and there is a risk that the lint eventually end up in the polish...

All you need is a nail polish remover and LINT FREE pads or fabric in cotton, torn into small pieces, that works just as well. But you can get lint free pads at ridiculous low prices on Ebay.

If the case is hard core you might also have to clean the lid inside with a flat brush dipped in polish remover, the same kind of brush you use for cleaning mishaps after polishing. But usually the thread on the bottleneck is the worst.
The thin end of a dotter can be useful as a scraping tool on the thread of the bottleneck to speed up the process between two soaked pads - see below.

So my next step is: Remove the lid from the bottle, wipe the bottle brush against the inside of the bottle neck to remove the drop of polish on it, and place it in a paper towel.
Soak a piece of lint free material in polish remover and place it on the bottle top.
Use a latex glove, if you want to protect the polish on your nails ;)

- with a firm grip twist the soaked pad around the bottle neck, back and forth.
It might be necessary to repeat this step with several pieces of lint free material, if it is a "bad case", so keep them within reach - as it is best to work quickly to prevent the brush to dry out!

This is what your bottle necks should look like - just like a brand new and never used bottle of polish!

This neck has some hard to reach corners, so here the tiny end of a dotting tool comes in handy as a scraper, or even used inside the soaked pad, to get into that corner.

After a few days: Open the polish again. Some dried polish from the lid might have stuck to the thread, so it might be necessary to repeat the process. And do it again after some days - and in any case make sure the lid still is screwed on tightly!

Your new and old polishes will love you if you make a habit of keeping their necks clean - and you will love them even more because they will remain a pleasure to work with!!

Other tips:
Go over you lids once a while to secure that they are screwed on tightly - chances in temperature can make them gradually open more or less - and give them a good shake at the same time.
Do not use tools to open a bottle of nail polish, if it cannot be opened normally. Place it under the running warm tap a few seconds - try again, and if it still not opens, hold it under the running water a little longer to heat it up and make the dried out polish a little elastic.

Planks a lot for the flowers

 

 

The base color is OPI Planks a Lot, hence the silly name, and when it was dry, I marked the middle of the tip and freehanded a triangle in a green acrylic color and a thin striper and painted some random lines within the triangle.  Then I painted the flowers – again with acrylic color, and I top coated with Seche Vite.

Grundfarven er OPI Planks a Lot, og deraf opstod det skøre navn. Da den var tør markerede jeg midten af spidsen på neglen og med akrylfarve malede jeg med en tynd striper pensel linier så det dannede et V, og inden for trekanten I V’et malede jeg tilfældige grønne striber. Derefter malede jeg blomsterne, og toplakken er Seche Vite.

DYI Homemade nail polish remover, 2 recipes – hjemmelavet neglelak fjerner, 2 opskrifter

Why spend a fortune on nail polish remover, when you easily can make a cheap one yourself?

There is a lot of recipes to be found on the internet, I tried what I thought looked the best, and adjusted it to meet my needs. I like a polish remover to work fast, but it shouldn't dry out the skin and nails, like pure acetone does.

I also came up with another even simpler recipe, that I’ll give you too.

Der er masser af opskrifter på internettet, og jeg besluttede at bruge de af dem, der så bedst ud, og justerede dem derefter så resultatet mødte mit behov. Jeg foretrækker en neglelakfjerner, der virker hurtigt, men uden at den udtørrer hud og negle som ren acetone gør.

Jeg har også selv lavet en endnu lettere opskrift, som jeg giver dig til sidst.

 Recipe 1/opskrift 1

You need/du skal bruge:

Pure acetone/ ren acetone

Glycerin

Water/vand

A glass container/en glas beholder.

Something to meassure in, et decilitermål af stål, eller andet at måle med.

Something to stir with/noget at røre med.

A newspaper/something to protect your table with/en avis eller andet til at beskytte bordet, du arbejder ved.

A container for your finished product (could be an empty acetone bottle)/en beholder, f.eks. en tom acetoneflaske, til at have dit færdige resultat i.

optional/valgfrit: fragrance/duft

01. First of all, you need to check, that the items you are going to use are resistant to acetone. There are no problems with glass and steel, that’s why I chose those materials and the original acetone bottle.

Allerførst skal du tjekke, at de du vil bruge kan tale acetone. Derfor har jeg brugt ting af glas og stål, samt den originale acetone flaske.

02. Pour 425ml (milliliter) acetone in your container, don’t worry it hasn’t to be that precise.

Hæld 425ml. acetone i din beholder (det er godt 4 dcl.), og det behøver altså ikke være så præcist.

03. Add 50-60ml glycerin.

Tilsæt 50-60ml. glycerin (godt en ½ dcl.)

04. Stir, and let it rest. You probably will see some of the glycerin layering as pearls on the bottom after a little while, that is why a glass container is great to use. The acetone is saturated and cannot dissolve the rest of the glycerin. You can add just a little more acetone. But first I prefer to take around 50 ml of water, and I add it gradually, while stirring, let it settle as you go along and then you add more, if necessary. You can add more or less, as long as the glycerin is dissolved completely, or at least almost.

Rør rundt, og lad blandingen hvile. Efter et lille øjeblik ser du formentlig lidt glycerin, der er faldet til bunds som perler, det er derfor en glasbeholder er god at blande i. Acetonen er mættet og kan ikke opløse mere glycerin. Du kan nu tilsætte en lille smule mere acetone. Men jeg foretrækker først at tage ca. ½ dlc. (50 ml) vand, som du gradvist tilføjer under omrøring. Lad blandingen hvile undervejs og se, om der fortsat synker glycerin til bunds, og tilsæt så mere vand. Men mere end den nævnte mængde er næppe nødvendig, og det betyder heller ikke noget, hvis der er nogle få perler af glycerin, der ikke er opløst.

05. If you like your nail polish remover to have a more pleasant fragrance and be a little more oily, you can add drops of an essential oil of your choice – or a cuticle oil with a strong fragrance.

Hvis du gerne vil have din neglelakfjerner til at dufte og, så kan du tilsætte nogle dråber af en hvilken som helst æterisk olie, som du synes om, eller du kan bruge en lidt for parfumeret neglebåndsolie, det tilføjer også lidt ekstra olie til blandingen.

Recipe 2 – opskrift 2

You also can mix pure acetone with a cheap, oil based acetone-free polish remover, that in itself maybe isn’t effective at all.

You need to mix the remover in the acetone gradually, lightly shake or stir, and test it on your nails to obtain the level of “greasiness” combined with a good ability to remove polish.  

In Denmark we have a brand called DKS Impulsiv a cheap supermarket brand, that I use for this purpose. They do export to a number of countries, so you might be able to find it where you live. 

I use approximately 1/10 part DKS Impulsiv to 1 part acetone. That is aprox. 1 lid full (10ml) of the DKS to 90-100ml acetone. If you do not have a funnel, you can fold some tin foil, at use that.

En anden og endnu mere simple løsning er at købe en billig, oliebaseret acetone fri neglelakfjerner, der måske i sig selv ikke virker specielt effektivt.

F.eks. er DKS Impulsiv et godt bud, og 100ml. koster i vores lokale Føtex 20 kroner. Jeg plejer at hælde den gradvist i og teste indimellem, så jeg føler at mine fingre er tilpas ”olierede”, men uden at det går ud over effektiviteten og tiden det tager at fjerne lakken. 

Jeg bruger ca. 1 kapsel (ca. 10ml) DKS Impulsiv til lige knap 1 dcl. acetone, altså til ca. 90 - 100ml, men prøv dig frem, så det passer DIG bedst. Hvis du ikke har en tragt, kan du bare folde en af alufolie.

I love my dispenser bottles (bought on Ebay from China at a very low price). I have one for pure acetone for cleaning stamping plates/tools, one for rubbing alcohol for removing any oily residue on my nails before applying base coat, and one for each of my DIY polish removers. They are simple to use, place a cotton pad, press down a few times - ready to use...

Jeg har en til ren acetone til brug når jeg skal gøre stamping plader og redskaber rne, en til propylalkohol, som jeg affedter minenegle med inden jeg lægger base coat, og en til hver af mine egne blandinger. De er enkle at bruge, læg en vantrondel på, pres ned et pargange - færdig til brug...

1½ months of repairing a ripped/torn nail with a teabag – 1½ mdr. med reparation af revnet negl med tebreve

In the beginning of December, my thumb nails were longer than ever, and they both naturally curl inwards at the outside, getting more pronounced the longer they get. I had filed the sides, and if it was because of a lot of typing, I don’t know, but within a few days they both showed a rip in the middle of the nail bed. Needless to say, I was extremely careful and did not use my thumbs as tools whatsoever, and I filed them rather short.
Mid December I decided it was time to do something, my right thumb had twice been in danger of a serious break, where bloodshed would have been the result. So I patched the break and the area around it with a tiny piece of teabag. First I added a little base coat to the area, then I placed the little piece of tea bag, and with a rosewood stick and/or tweezers I placed it properly and flattened it. After a while i added base coat as normal. Se photos below.
Note: If I really worked with my hands, I secured the thumbs with band aid or similar for an extra support of the break.  In the future I'm going to use another method (see farther below), but the theabag method is an easy quick fix.
Oh, and yes, I know I have pronounced ridges beyond buffing, but I have learned to live with them as a part of getting older :)
I begyndelsen af December var mine tommenegle længere end nogensinde, og de har begge en tendens til at bue mere og mere ind mod fingeren på ydersiden, og det forværres jo længere de bliver. Jeg havde filet siden for at gøre det mindre udtalt, men indenfor få dage revnede de begge nede midt på fingeren. Om det var arbejdet ved computeren, der var medvirkende årsag, ved jeg ikke, men det er vist ikke nødvendigt at sige, at jeg ikke brugte mine tommelnegle som redskaber, og jeg fik dem filet langt ned!
I midten af december gik den ikke mere, det var tid at gore noget, min højre tommel havde to gange været I fare for virkelig at hænge fast, og det ville have forårsaget et blodblad. Jeg reparerede bruddet og området omkring det med et lille stykke af et tebrev. Ført duppede jeg området med en grundlak/base coat, og så placerede jeg det lille stykke, som jeg ved hjælp af en rosenpind (pincept kan også bruges) fik sat ordentligt på plads, og efter kort tid, lagde jeg grundlak som sædvanligt.
OBS: Hvis jeg rigtigt skulle bruge mine hænder, brugte jeg f.eks. plaster omkring mine tomler for at give ekstra støtte til bruddet. I fremtiden vil jeg helt klart bruge den metode, som jeg nævner aller nederst, men som en hurtig løsning virker tebrev metoden fint!
Og ja, jeg har udtalte riller der forlængst har passeret buffing stadiet, men jeg har lært at leve med dem som en del af at blive ældre :)

With a ridge filler base coat - med en ridge filler grundlak

I had gotten some glue, and here below you can see, that I used it the same way. But after having done that a couple of times, I felt my nails started to peel, so I went back to the base coat method, because there were no difference in how long they worked between applications.
I change polish often, and sometimes a patch would last 3-4 changes – but sometimes/often I had to redo it every time I changed polish.
Efter at have fået fat i neglelim, brugte jeg samme opskrift, se nedenstående billeder. Men efter nogle gange, syntes jeg at neglen blev noget skør og splintrede, så jeg gik tilbage til grundlak metoden – og der var overhovedet ingen forskel på, hvor længe det holdt. Jeg skifter lak ofte, og sommetider kunne lappen holde til 3-4 skift, men oftest måtte jeg skifte den for hvert skift af neglelak.

If, or rather the next time, I rip/tear/break a nail, I'll use silk wrap, resin and activator to fix it. I bought it HERE + silk wraps (the set is with fibreglass), and I'll make a new post, when I need to use it...

NOTE: Even if the product is called lightless gel, it has nothing to do with gel nails, as also stated in the video.

Hvis, eller rettere når det sker igen, vil beg bruge såkaldte silk wraps til at fixe problemet. Jeg har købt et sæt HER + silke wraps, fordi sættet er med fiberglas wrappings - men mere derom når jeg får brug for det.

Findus thinks that stripes are gorgeous, horisontal or vertikal - period!! Findus synes at striber er kønne, uanset om de er vandrette eller lodrette - punktum!

The first zebra in this theme (se link above) made my nails look extra short and fat/broad (and they were a bit short too), I wanted to see if the “vertical lines in clothes makes you look thinner” rule also applies to nails.  The base color is China Glaze Champagne Bubbles and I painted the stripes with acrylic paint.
On the “horizontal striped nails”, there is no top coat (I removed the stripes to do the vertical). I made them as thin as possible, and it looks better than in my initial zebra. On the vertical striped nails” I have Seche Vite Top Coat – what do you think, does the rule apply to nails as well?
Den første zebra i dette tema (se linket øverst i dette indlæg) fik  mine negle til at se ekstra korte og brede/fede ud (og de var nu heller ikke så lange den dag). Så i dette forsøg vil jeg se om reglen om at ”lodrette linjer i tøj virker mere slankende ” også gælder for negle. Grundfarven er China Glaze Champagne Bubbles, og jeg malede striberne med akrylfarve.
De ”vandret stribede negle” har ikke top coat på, for jeg fjernede striberne efter fotografering, så jeg kunne male de lodrette, der til gengæld har fået top coat på. De vandrette har jeg malet meget tynde, og det ser bedre ud på mine negle. Men hvad synes du, virker de lodrette linjer slankede på negle…?

This is two coats of Color Club Wild at Heart, a gorgeous medium holographic purple. When dry I used a dotting tool to create the uneven leopard spots with Essie Lovie Dovie. Finally I used a fine brush and gold acrylic paint to outline the spots, but you can use a golden nail art color too. On top is Seche Vite top coat. Do you like my holographic, purple leopard?
PS: Sorry about the picture overload, but I cannot help myself, when I have holographic polish on my nails ;)

Dette er to lag Color Club Wild at Heart, en vidunderlig medium holografisk lilla. Da den var tør, brugte jeg et dotting tool til at lave leopardens ujævne pletter med Essie Lovie Dovie. Da de var tørre brugte jeg en lille tynd pensel og guld akrylfarve til at omkranse leopardens pletter, men du kan også bruge en guld nail art lak, eller guld neglelak og en pin pensel. Som top coat brugte jeg Seche Vite. Kan du li’ min holografiske, lilla leopard?
PS, undskyld de mange billeder, men jeg kan ikke lade være med at gå amok, når jeg får holografisk lak på neglene ;)
